Most 17 year old’s are struggling with A-Levels or spending tons of money on driving lessons, but not Gianluigi Donnarumma. The 17 year old has quickly became a prominent member of the AC Milan squad and has been tipped to succeed the legendary Gianluigi Buffon as national team goalkeeper. But how has this teenager got to this position. In light of the Derby della Madonnina (Milan Derby) on Sunday, we decided to take a look.
On October 25th 2015, Donnarumma made his Serie A debut after he was chosen to start ahead of Diego López and Christian Abbiati after showing good form in pre-season tournaments and AC Milan showing poor form in the league. He had only been promoted to the men’s squad in June 2015. He became the second youngest goalkeeper to start in the history of Italian football and helped his team to a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo. His team mate and rival, López, said Donnarumma was “the future of Milan and of Italian football” After 3 starts and 3 victories, Donnarumma became the regular first team goalkeeper and at the end of the season earned him a place among the top 25 of Don Balón‘s ranking of the world’s best footballers under age 21.
“He has great talent and I think he can do more than I did with Milan’s colours, because he is very young … Gigio has already demonstrated his value, and I think he’s going to develop even more.”
Dida (Milan Legend)
As for the future, it will be interesting to see if Donnarumma stays at Milan or moves on to a larger club. He could stay at Milan and rebuild the once prestigious club or move away with the chance or developing his career in a more competitive league. It is rumored that Manchester City are very interested in the 17 year old as well as every top European club but one thing is for sure, he will develop into an incredible player very similar to his rival Gianluigi Buffon with many years of silverware ahead of him.
